Matthew's LTDs - a curious pair:

(Back to Fairlane & LTDs Visitors Cars.)

When it comes to 70's Fords and making a huge impact, you can't go much better than this pair - taking the best of what was available in the Ford world at that time (let's face it - mid to late 70's Mustangs and Thunderbirds were designed to go to the crusher!)  As the last of the true LTDs (these models represented stretched versions of the Fairlane - not just a different grill with all the fruit) Matt couldn't help but fall under their charm picking up the white '78 model after he "found it sitting under a tree in a farmers front yard with 80,000 genuine k's on the clock and a big '51 under the hood."  $2500 changed hands and Matt had himself a bargain - especially considering the only alterations to it as you see it here are a set of 12 slotters and to "washing all the dirt and crap off it to gave it a polish"!!!

Affectionately known as the 'Rolls Royce' model for it's grill shape, it and the 74' LTD in the background share the honour of being the only models that were actually longer than their Fairlane counterparts being stretched between the B & C pillars requiring special longer doors on the rear.  Which brings us to the 1974 LTD in the back ground - "It was owned by my next door neighbour since new and must have done about a million miles - he used it to tow his cement mixer and building supplies."

Swapping his old Subaru wagon for the 74' made plenty of sense at the time - although his neighbour might disagree "Every time I see him now he says he wants to get another LTD." - and who can blame him considering the pure class and ease of driving each of these oozes...  With four-wheel disc brakes and as close as you're going to get to a full house GT engine, it's a hard life in this game!  "The best thing about it is it only costs $300 a year to fully insure.  I must say I like the 74 model the best - it has more character."  Well Matt, you've managed to make us jealous yet again (as with all the other visitors cars) and we wish you many more thunderous miles in this great pair - it's really nice to see someone go for something a little different and yet tasteful at the same time...
